BREXIT, Trump, Leicester . . . 2016 has taught us to expect the unexpected.
But the odds on Jaguar making an electric SUV? Nah, mate. Absolutely no frickin’ . . . wait, what . . . it just has.
Jag keeps getting younger and cooler
This is the I-Pace, half sports car, half SUV but 100 per cent future-proof because it is zero emission with a 300-mile range.
The car was unveiled at the LA Motor Show in front of Miranda Kerr, Michelle Rodriguez, Niall Horan, James Corden and Benjamin Button.
OK. That last one is a lie. That’s a film. But Jaguar is the Benjamin Button of the car world.
No longer the crusty colonel with pipe and slippers, Jag keeps getting younger and cooler.
First with the F-Type, then XE, F-Pace SUV, and now I-Pace. The reinvention has seen global sales soar 74 PER CENT this year to 118,000. So what of the I-Pace?
It hits the road in 2018 with two electric motors, one on each axle, producing 400hp and 700Nm of torque. That’s crazy fast, 0-60mph in four seconds, with no lag, no gear-changes and no interruption of power.
And because there are no oily bits – no engine or transmission tunnel – the cabin has a flat floor and acres of space inside, complemented by two huge hi-tech touchscreens.
You may also recognise that bonnet scoop, derived from C-X75 supercar, to help air flow and I’m loving that patterned glass roof.
Designer Ian Callum said: “Electric cars are inevitable but Jaguar will make them desirable.”
He’s made a good start.
