Be prepared ... top tips for buying online

HERE at Sun Motors we want to make searching for the perfect used car as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Unfortunately, there are people out there who look to profit by scamming buyers, and some of these fraudsters can be hard to spot when operating online.

Therefore, it is important to do everything you can to stay safe when buying your car, by following our simple rules:

Don't pay anything before you have seen the car

When buying a car, it’s wise to do your research on the seller as well as the vehicle. Most fraudulent ‘dealers’ will try to force you to transfer money before you’ve even laid eyes on the car. Often they will insist on speaking over email rather than on the phone.

While in some cases this may be legitimate, it should set alarm bells ringing. Always arrange a test drive, and trust nobody until you have met them.

If the price looks too good to be true, it probably is

Always check that the price of the car is in-line with the market. While we always try to find you a quality motor at a bargain price, one which seems “too good to be true” is often a sign of fraud. Check out other similar cars on sunmotors: if the price is any lower  then beware.

If a car appears under-priced, ask the seller questions about the valuation until you are completely satisfied that the offer is legitimate.

Be thorough ... inspect the car inside and out

Always visit the seller and take the car for a test drive

Be sure to thoroughly inspect any car you are looking to purchase and take it for a test drive. This should always be done from the forecourt of a car dealership; never let the dealer meet you halfway. Make sure this is done in the daytime, so you can easily spot any damage. Our guide to what to look out for on a test drive will help you make sure you are not being scammed.

Next, you need to see the V5C vehicle registration document that shows the registered keeper plus its MOT certificate. Check the car’s mileage matches up to its service and MOT history, to make sure it hasn’t been clocked.

Perhaps most importantly, carry out a full car history check to make sure it has never been recorded as stolen, written-off, scrapped, or is subject to outstanding finance.

Make sure you are completely satisfied before you hand over a penny

The number one rule is trust your instinct. When you are happy to go ahead and buy your perfect used car, only pay by card, bank transfer or cheque; or another method where you are sure you can track your payment.

Never wire money to foreign accounts or use a money transfer service such as Western Union, as these are often the preferred methods of a fraudulent seller. Remember that cash transactions cannot be tracked and could leave you out of pocket, with no car.

Don't be conned ... make sure you can track your payment

Be careful of mail attachments

A general safety precaution that should apply to any online transaction - be aware of opening any emails or related attachments from unknown or untrusted sources. If in doubt, delete the email before opening and ensure you keep your antivirus software up to date.

Remember the responsibility to check the sale is legitimate sits with you as the buyer

This is known as “buyer beware” and it is vital that you have done everything you can to be certain that the deal is legitimate and right for you. As a classified advertising site, disclaims any responsibility for the information published on the car as we receive the information direct from advertisers.

The vast majority of dealers are genuine and trustworthy and car sales are perfectly legitimate. By staying on the ball and following our advice, we hope you will be able to find the perfect used car for you with confidence.
