GREEDY car insurers hike premiums by up to 39 per cent when drivers have a crash that isn’t their fault.
The biggest rise came from Esure while More Than upped its quote by 33 per cent and Rias by 29 after no-fault claims.
In each case, the driver was innocent but their insurer still had to pay.
Consumer champion Which? got quotes from 12 major UK insurers.
Even if repairs were met by the other driver, four of the 12 upped costs — More Than 33 per cent, Esure (17), Axa (14) and Admiral (11).
Which? said: “You will be regarded as at fault if your insurer has to pay.
“This would apply if your car was hit while parked and the other driver couldn’t be traced.”
Esure raised a premium by 15 per cent for declaring a scratch, without claiming. It said an “incident” would cover a range of damage scenarios and it wasn’t “a specific uplift for a scratch”.
